Why it is called 96 Kuli Maratha?

Traditionally called the warrior clans from the west, the 96 Kuli Marathas have been the mainstay of the state since the foundation of the Maratha empire was laid in the 16th century. The community derives its name from the 96 clans that ran the day-to-day empires of the Adilshahi and the Nizamshahi kingdoms.

Is 96 Kuli Maratha low caste?

Any marathi person will tell you that Marathas(96 kuli) are considered a low caste in Maharashtra. Brahmins made public declarations that all Marathas are all shudras. Even the highest so called Marathas (Shivaji, Shahu etc) were shown to be of peasant origin. i.e Shudras.

What is Kshatriya Maratha?

The Marathas are a group of castes comprising of peasants, landowners and warriors. While the top layer of the Marathas—with surnames like Deshmukh, Bhonsle, More, Shirke, Jadhav—are the Kshatriyas (warriors), the rest belong to a predominantly agrarian sub-caste called Kunbi.

Are kunbi and Maratha same?

Modern scholars agree that Marathas and Kunbi are the same. Anthropologist J.V. Ferreira, from the University of Mumbai states: “The Maratha claim to belong to the ancient 96 Kshatriya families has no foundation in fact and may have been adopted after the Marathas became with Shivaji a power to be reckoned with”.

“Marathas are called Kunbis in Konkan and parts of Vidarbha. There is no difference between Marathas and Kunbis. There is historical proof that Marathas and Kunibs are one caste,” community leader Pravin Gaikwad said.

Two weeks before the coronation, a sacred thread ceremony took place where Shivaji was initiated into the Kshatriya caste and raised to the Rajput warrior clan of Sisodias.
