Why is my green tea not green?

Most green tea varieties are grown in the shade, which helps the leaves maintain the bright green color. However, when the leaves are exposed to too much direct sunlight, they can lose the green color and begin to turn brown.

Why does green tea go brown?

The colors of green tea are caused by chlorophyll in the tea leaves, which begins to oxidize and turn brown the moment the leaves are picked from the tree and begin to ferment. To prevent fermentation, the leaves are steamed or roasted in a roasting kettle immediately after being harvested.

Why my green tea is yellow?

The Japanese steam the leaves which is why the leaves maintain the green colour. However, you’ve to keep the green tea dry. If it’s exposed for too long (or too often) to air and humidity, the leaves will start to oxidise and turn yellow. In such cases, it also often starts to loose it’s aroma and flavour.

Brewed green tea should be green, light tan or yellow in color when brewed.
