It’s because their basic roots are too differnet. It’s commonly said that some roots seem to be related such as 섬 [sʌm] in Korean and しま [shima] in Japanese, and 곰 [kom] in Korean from 고마 [koma] in old Korean and くま [kuma] in Japanese, these are not that a lot. Rather, they have each different basic native words.
