Why air pressure should not used for hydrostatic test?

Why air pressure should not used for hydrostatic test?

WARNING: The testing methods described in this section are for water-pressure testing only. These procedures should not be applied for air-pressure testing because of the serious safety hazards involved with compressed air.

Why is leak testing with compressed air dangerous?

Testing with High-Pressure Air If something were to break or come free during a high-pressure air test, the released air could propel an object far with a great deal of force. This is why the elimination of trapped air when initially filling pipelines can be so hazardous.

What happens during a hydrostatic test?

The test involves filling the vessel or pipe system with a liquid, usually water, which may be dyed to aid in visual leak detection, and pressurization of the vessel to the specified test pressure. Pressure tightness can be tested by shutting off the supply valve and observing whether there is a pressure loss.

How does temperature affect pressure in a hydrostatic test?

A rise in temperature of the pipe wall and test liquid causes circumferential expansion of the pipe wall and also an increase in volume of the test liquid. The combined effect of these expansions has the same effect as pumping additional water into the test section and will cause an increase in pressure.

Which is stronger air pressure or water pressure?

Actually, water pressure is generally stronger than air pressure. If you pumped the air pressure up enough (like you do when you pump air into a bike tire), then the air pressure may become stronger than standard water pressure.

Does air leak before water?

Yes it IS possible to leak air and not water during the test time. Air is “thinner” than water and migrates through leaks easier and faster than water. Leaks can be found at lower pressure. Helium leak test is better than an air test.

Why is pressure testing with air dangerous?

Pneumatic testing generates potentially dangerous stored energy because the air or gases are easily compressed when used in the systems without liquid.

What is hydrostatic pipe testing?

Hydrostatic (Hydro) Testing is a process where components such as piping systems, gas cylinders, boilers, and pressure vessels are tested for strength and leaks. Hydro tests are often required after shutdowns and repairs in order to validate that equipment will operate under desired conditions once returned to service.

How does temperature affect water pressure?

As the fluid temperature increases, it tries to expand, but expansion is prevented by the walls of the container. A useful thumb rule for water is that pressure in a water-solid system will increase about 100 psi for every 1 F increase in temperature.

Does temperature affect pressure test?

It is worth noting a temperature change of 1oC has the effect of changing the test pressure by approximately 0.35\%. Hence, the higher the pressure the greater the temperature sensitivity, conversely increasing the vacuum decreases the temperature sensitivity experienced.

How does air pressure affect water?

Atmospheric pressure influences the boiling point of water. When atmospheric pressure increases, the boiling point becomes higher, and when atmospheric pressure decreases (as it does when elevation increases), the boiling point becomes lower. Pressure on the surface of water tends to keep the water molecules contained.
