When should I turn VSync on?

VSync is great when the frame rate exceeds the monitor’s refresh rate. However, if you come to a graphically intense moment, and the frame rate drops below the refresh rate, the graphics card will drop it down further to best match the monitor’s preferences.

What does turning off VSync do?

When VSync is off, you get virtually unlimited Frames Per Second (FPS) but depending on your configuration, screen tearing, jerkiness or stuttering is more likely. In older Intel® graphics drivers, this feature could be disabled for OpenGL* applications (not DirectX* games/applications).

Does VSync affect performance?

VSync only helps with screen tearing, and it only really does that by limiting FPS when necessary. If your monitor can’t keep up with the FPS of a particular game, then VSync can make a big difference. In some games where higher FPS can lead to reduced input lag, it can also affect your competitive performance.

Turning on Vsync will push the card to try to produce 60 frames (which it cannot) will significantly drop its efficiency and performance. So… it wont damage your gpu but, it will increase/decrease the performance/efficiency/powerconsumption/framerate depending on the situation.

    Should I turn VSync off?

    You should turn Vsync off because the input delay and limited frame rate are bad for your gaming performance. To eliminate screen tearing, you can always limit FPS using the in-game FPS limiter or other 3rd party software instead of using Vsync. Besides, if you have a high refresh rate monitor, Vsync also might be unnecessary.
