What is coal gasification and how does it work?

What is coal gasification and how does it work?

Gasification of coal is a process in which coal is partially oxidated by air, oxygen, steam or carbon dioxide under controlled conditions to produce a fuel gas. The hot fuel gas is cooled in heat exchangers, with the production of steam, and cleaned before combustion in a gas turbine.

What is coal gasification technology?

Coal gasification technology is the conversion of a carbonaceous material by reaction with oxygen and steam to produce synthesis gas (syngas) that is a feedstock to produce more valuable and higher quality liquid fuels such as diesel and kerosene.

Which coal gasification process will produce gas having maximum methane content?

Because steam gasification reaction, water–gas shift reaction and methanation reaction mainly occur in this area, a large amount of methane can be produced.

Why is coal liquefaction necessary?

The reason for this is that coal hydrogenation yields high quality gasoline for aviation and motors, while FT synthesis chiefly produced high-quality diesel, lubrication oil, and waxes together with some smaller amounts of lower-quality motor gasoline.

What is coal bed methane used for?

It is a primary clean energy source of natural gas. The development and utilization of CBM is of great social and economic benefit. It is a clean-burning fuel (compressed natural gas—CNG) for domestic and industrial uses. The extraction of CNG reduces explosion hazards in underground coal mines.

How is coal converted to methane?

Synthetic crude oil can be produced from coal through coal liquification, and coal can be converted to natural gas (methane) through a coal gasification process. This gas produced from coal, could be made into gasoline for cars, kerosene for jet planes, or mixed with natural gas for home heating and industrial use.

How does coal produce gas?

It is produced when coal is heated strongly in the absence of air. Coal gas contains a mixture of calorific gases including hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, ethylene and volatile hydrocarbons together with small quantities of non-calorific gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Why is gasification better than combustion?

In summary, gasification has inherent advantages over combustion for emissions control. Emission control is simpler in gasification than in combustion because the produced syngas in gasification is at higher temperature and pressure than the exhaust gases produced in combustion.

What happened to the CO 2 from the Great Plains synfuels plant?

Weyburn Project The Great Plains Synfuels Plant (GPSP) has had the ability to capture carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) through the Rectisol process for sequestration or sale as a byproduct. However, no viable market was found for the CO 2 in the early years of operation, and the captured CO 2 was simply discharged to the atmosphere.

Is coal gasification economically viable for producing synthetic natural gas?

All are commercially demonstrated technologies. The economic viability of producing synthetic natural gas (SNG) through coal gasification is heavily dependent on the market prices of natural gas and the coal feedstock to be used, in addition to the capital cost of the gasification plant.

What is the process of Synfuels?

Simplified Plant Process at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant The raw gas is cooled after it exits the gasifier, removing tar, oils, phenols, ammonia and water via condensation from the gas stream. These products are then purified, transported, or stored for later use as a fuel for steam generation.

Where does Cenovus Energy get its CO2 from?

Company/Alliance: Cenovus Energy, Apache Canada, PTRC (Petroleum Technology Research Center) CO2 Source: Coal Gasification and Coal Power from the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, North Dakota (The CO2 is piped to Weyburn EOR site in Saskatchewan Canada)
