What happens during Satori?

Satori means the experience of awakening (“enlightenment”) or apprehension of the true nature of reality. It is often considered an experience which cannot be expressed in words.

What happens during Zen meditation?

Zen meditation is similar to mindfulness in that it’s about focusing on the presence of mind. Over time, they learn how to keep their minds from wandering and may even be able to tap into their unconscious minds. Often, the goal is to become more aware of preconceived notions and gain insight into oneself.

Kenshō (見性) is a Japanese term from the Zen tradition. Ken means “seeing”, shō means “nature, essence”. Kenshō is an initial insight or awakening, not full Buddhahood. It is to be followed by further training to deepen this insight, and learn to express it in daily life.

As a central form of meditation in Zen Buddhism, zazen is usually coupled with study and teaching to help develop greater clarity in our practice. Zazen often includes a specific practice, such as counting your breaths, to focus your attention and develop your powers of concentration.

How to practice zazen?

To practice Zazen, you need to be sitting upright and attentive. This posture helps you keep your awareness on the body and the present moment. If possible, sit facing a wall. You should be balanced between staying grounded and being open. Half lotus and full lotus are ideal postures for Zazen.

Why do Buddhists practice zazen?

It reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and is effective in working with depression, anxiety, and anger. These are all good reasons to meditate, but ultimately Buddhists practice zazen and other meditations to realize what Buddhism calls our true nature, which is beyond self-identity with its self-imposed limitations.

What is the best position to sit in zazen?

You should be balanced between staying grounded and being open. Half lotus and full lotus are ideal postures for Zazen. If you can’t sit like this, you can try a different position.
