What do big floaters look like?

They may look to you like black or gray specks, strings, or cobwebs that drift about when you move your eyes and appear to dart away when you try to look at them directly. Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid.

Can floaters be large?

Most floaters are small and don’t bother vision much. But one kind — called a Weiss ring — is larger and ring-shaped. It can interfere more with vision than other floaters. This larger type of floater is caused when the vitreous, which normally hugs the retina in the back of the eye, frees itself from the retina.

Why are my floaters so big?

As you get older, that vitreous continues to liquefy and as it liquefies, it actually shrinks. When it shrinks, it pulls away from the retina. It’s kind of adherent to the retina in a few places. Where it’s more tightly adherent as it pulls away from there, it creates larger floaters.

Are eye floaters normal at 21?

Most people see floaters some time during their lives. Many individuals notice some floaters even in their teens and 20s, and people who are nearsighted are particularly likely to have floaters at a younger age. Floaters tend to become more frequent as a person ages.

Are large eye floaters dangerous?

Most of the time, floaters are not the sign of anything dangerous. Floaters caused by loose cells, for example, are usually not that bothersome and often go away on their own in a few weeks or months. The floaters that look like wispy threads tend to be more visible, and in most cases they will also go away with time.

Can large floaters be removed?

Floaters can be removed, but for most people the risk to vision from the surgery is greater than the problem posed by the floater. Although there are no specific vitamins for eye floater relief, research has shown that vitamins from dietary or supplemental sources have antioxidants and other properties that can improve some eye conditions and keep your eyes healthy. Some evidence shows that carotenoids and vitamins B, C and E may benefit the long-term health of your eyes.
