In the Christian tradition the conscience is predominantly considered to have its origins in God or through discovering God`s will – if this is done correctly, the conscience is therefore to be considered a reliable guide.

If you have something on your conscience, you feel guilty because you know you have done something wrong. Now the murderer has two deaths on his conscience.

Can you develop your conscience?

Your conscience is the inner sense of right and wrong that guides your motives (what you think) and actions (what you do). It is a skill that can be developed with rational thinking, emotional awareness and practice.

How does our conscience help us?

Through our individual conscience, we become aware of our deeply held moral principles, we are motivated to act upon them, and we assess our character, our behavior and ultimately our self against those principles.

How is a person’s conscience formed?

A conscience which is both well formed (shaped by education and experience) and well informed (aware of facts, evidence and so on) enables us to know ourselves and our world and act accordingly. Seeing conscience in this way is important because it teaches us ethics is not innate.

How does conscience develop?

One’s conscience is formed basically through three processes that take place during the early and middle years, and are refined during adolescence. These are the processes of identification with parents, instruction and training, and interactions with one’s environment.
