Is it common for cancer to come back?

Will the cancer come back? You may wonder how likely it is that the cancer will come back or how long people with the same type of cancer live. Cancer is most likely to recur in the first five years after treatment ends.

What does it mean when your cancer comes back?

When cancer comes back after treatment, or after a period of time when the cancer couldn’t be detected, it’s called recurrence or recurrent cancer. It means that even though you were treated and thought to be cancer-free, some cancer cells survived.

What are the chances of surviving cancer twice?

One to three percent of survivors develop a second cancer different from the originally treated cancer. The level of risk is small, and greater numbers of survivors are living longer due to improvements in treatment.

How do you know if your cancer is back?

Warning signs of a distant recurrence tend to involve a different body part from the original cancer site. For example, if cancer recurs in the lungs, you might experience coughing and difficulty breathing, while a recurrence of cancer in the brain can cause seizures and headaches.

Cancer recurrence may seem even more unfair then. Worse, it’s often more aggressive in the younger cancer survivor – it may grow and spread faster. This aggressiveness means that it could come back earlier and be harder to treat.

How soon after chemo can cancer return?

Most cancers that are going to come back will do so in the first 2 years or so after treatment. After 5 years, you are even less likely to get a recurrence. For some types of cancer, after 10 years your doctor might say that you are cured. Some types of cancer can come back many years after they were first diagnosed.

Does Chemo shorten life expectancy?

During the 3 decades, the proportion of survivors treated with chemotherapy alone increased (from 18\% in 1970-1979 to 54\% in 1990-1999), and the life expectancy gap in this chemotherapy-alone group decreased from 11.0 years (95\% UI, 9.0-13.1 years) to 6.0 years (95\% UI, 4.5-7.6 years).

Is chemotherapy really worth it?

Suffering through cancer chemotherapy is worth it — when it helps patients live longer. But many patients end up with no real benefit from enduring chemo after surgical removal of a tumor. Going in, it’s been hard to predict how much chemo will help prevent tumor recurrence or improve survival chances.

Why does cancer keep returning?

There are different reasons for why cancer might come back. One reason is that the original treatment did not get rid of all the cancer cells and those left behind grew into a new tumour. Another is that some cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body and started growing there to form a tumour. Cancer can come back after surgery because:
