Is fencing sword a rapier?
The modern sport of fencing does not use rapiers. You will sometimes hear people, including sport fencers, say that the modern sport weapon known as the epee simulates, or is descended from, the rapier. This is untrue.

Why did people stop using Longswords?
Longswords were phased out because they didn’t have a place on the battlefield anymore when armour went out of fashion. Another casualty of guns ruining everything. In a civilian sense, rapiers could be specialised duelling weapons and they were fancier than longswords. Tastes in fashion meant that rapiers were cool.
