Following a proposal from Demos, a “think-and-do” tank searching for solutions to economic inequality, the Biden administration has been planning on shutting down the three major credit bureaus. In their place, a public Credit Reporting Agency (CRA) would be in charge of credit reporting and scoring.

Why do credit bureaus exist?

Credit bureaus provide some of the information creditors and lenders use to help them make important lending decisions. While credit bureaus collect credit information in order to make it available to certain third parties, the decision to deny or approve someone credit ultimately lies with the lender or creditor.

How can credit bureaus be prevented?

Contact each of the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — individually to freeze your credit:
