How similar are French and Latin?

The French language belongs to the Romance language family, which is a group of languages that all evolved from the language of the Romans, Latin. Each language in the Romance family has since evolved in different directions, and today they’re all quite different from Latin.

It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French evolved from Gallo-Romance, the Latin spoken in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul.

Is French and Latin different?

None! They are barely different! The big difference comes when pronunciation appears. Spanish is pretty conservative in pronunciation while French has constant pronunciation shifts every century, so French pronunciation diverged considerably from Latin, Spanish diverged too from Latin in sound, but much much less.

What is difference between Latin and Italian?

They are different languages with different vocabulary and grammar. Italian inherits some things from Latin. Italian is a contemporary spoken language and the official language of Italy and a few other places and Latin is no longer spoken as an official language.

How similar are Portuguese and French?

Lexical similarity between French and Portuguese is 0.75 when 1 is similar. In comparison, English similarity to French is about 0.27, and English to Portuguese is close to zero. The lexical similarity is only one indication of the mutual intelligibility of the two languages.
