How long can bullfrogs go without eating?

Adult frogs can survive for extended periods (3–4 weeks) without feeding if their quarters are clean, but long-term survival requires feeding the equivalent of 10–12 full-grown crickets two to three times a week.

Bullfrogs are prone to obesity. Large adults should only be fed 2-3 times a week in moderation. Younger frogs can be fed size appropriate food every other day. It is not recommended to feed bullfrogs from your hand as they can have a painful bite.

The basic items you need for the tank are a powerful filter, gravel, rocks to make a land area, a light and some aquatic plants. This species doesn’t need a heater if you keep the tank in a warmish room.

Set up a large tank for the frogs, the bigger the better. Mature female bullfrogs can reach 8 inches long, and the males aren’t much smaller. At a bare minimum, you need at least 20 gallons for one frog and 5 extra gallons for each additional one.

It hunts by everting its sticky tongue. The tongue attaches to its prey and draws it into the frog’s enormous mouth. Once there, it can be held by the dermal teeth while the frog kills it.

How do you feed bullfrogs?

Bullfrog Care: Bullfrogs will consume crickets, grasshoppers, fish eggs, worms, and (when the frog is large enough) mice. Bullfrogs that have just transformed from their tadpole stage should be fed earthworms or cricket nymphs. Make sure to feed them a little at a time so they do not gorge themselves.
