When the generator detects a power outage, the engine starts automatically and turns a power generating unit called an alternator. The alternator converts the mechanical energy of the internal combustion engine into electrical energy.

How is a generator used with renewable energy sources?

In the renewable sources of energy, the conversion to electricity in the form suitable for domestic and industrial use is either by a rotating generator or static power electronic converters. The type of generator that is most suitable for conversion of wind power depends on the range of speed of the wind turbine.

Why can’t a generator power itself?

A generator has to be driven by a mechanical source in order to rotate, an this rotation creates electrical power. So, if you join the generator leads to the motor leads, how will the unit rotate. There is no power present.
