Pegasus is spyware developed by the Israeli cyberarms firm NSO Group that can be covertly installed on mobile phones (and other devices) running most versions of iOS and Android. The 2021 Project Pegasus revelations suggest that the current Pegasus software can exploit all recent iOS versions up to iOS 14.6.

How does cell phone spyware work?

Spyware installed on rooted (for Android) or jailbroken (for iPhone) devices can allow someone to turn on the webcam or microphone, take screenshots, see activity on third party apps (such as Snapchat or WhatsApp), and intercept, forward, or record phone calls.

How does Pegasus malware work?

Once installed, Pegasus can theoretically harvest any data from the device and transmit it back to the attacker. It can steal photos and videos, recordings, location records, communications, web searches, passwords, call logs and social media posts.

Which antivirus can detect Pegasus spyware?

But, a new antivirus iVerify claims that it can tell you if your phone is infected with Pegasus. In a tweet, Ryan Storz, security engineer at the firm Trail of Bits, who leads development of iVerify said: “Just released iVerify 20.0, which now tells you if it detects traces of Pegasus.”

Is Pegasus spyware detectable?

‘ Pegasus spyware is nearly impossible to detect. After it is uninstalled, it doesn’t leave any trace, and there is no way to tell whether the device was affected in the past. Your phone will not show any lags or visible signs when it is infected by Pegasus.

How to protect your device from Pegasus spyware?

1 Only open links from known and trusted contacts and sources when using your device. Pegasus is deployed to Apple devices through an iMessage link. 2 Make sure your device is updated with any relevant patches and upgrades. 3 Although it may sound obvious, you should limit physical access to your phone.

What is NSO’s Pegasus spyware?

Where neither spear-phishing nor zero-click attacks succeed, Pegasus can also be installed over a wireless transceiver located near a target, or, according to an NSO brochure, simply manually installed if an agent can steal the target’s phone. Once installed on a phone, Pegasus can harvest more or less any information or extract any file.

How much does Pegasus spyware cost in India?

The Pegasus spyware is sold in the form of licenses and the actual prices depend on the contract. The cost of one license can be as high as Rs 70 lakh. With one license, multiple smartphones can be tracked. As per past estimates of 2016, for spying on just 10 people using Pegasus, NSO Group charges a minimum of around Rs 9 crore.

Can Pegasus spyware infect iPhone 11 and iPhone 12?

Amnesty International just announced the results of analysis conducted by it and journalist advocacy and media group Forbidden Stories. The findings indicated that the Pegasus spyware program sold by surveillance company NSO Group was able to infect iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models through zero-click attacks in the iOS iMessage app.
