Does EMDR make you nauseous?
During the sessions, you may experience some unpleasant reactions to the surfacing of painful memories. Typical reactions include rapid heartbeat, sweating, or nausea. You can expect your therapist to try to minimize these reactions by directing your eye movement.
What is an Abreaction in EMDR?
According to EMDR psychotherapist and trauma specialist, Gillian O’Shea Brown, “an abreaction is a form of release or catharsis that occurs when a person accesses past pain and releases its ‘pent up’ charge.”
Does EMDR help with dissociation?
The ISSTD (International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation) endorses EMDR as an adjunctive treatment in their Guidelines for Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder in Adults (2011). They recommend that EMDR is not used as a standalone treatment but as part of an overall treatment plan.

Abreaction and Dissociation Trauma often causes people to dissociate from their emotions, memories, and/or identity. The amount of dissociation a person experiences can range from mild, similar to daydreaming, to severe, as in the case of people with dissociative identity disorder.
How do you use abreaction therapy?
Abreaction Therapy is implemented when a client is in need of an emotional and spiritual breakdown. By leading them through the event again and reliving the memories and feelings it releases fears and rejections that have been kept in since the event.
Are You having trouble with noticing during EMDR reprocessing?
A surprising number of issues can emerge from difficulty that clients may have with noticing. Most issues related to problems noticing are likely to occur in the first half of a reprocessing session and are more likely to happen when clients are new to EMDR reprocessing (but they can occur any time).
Do you provide psychoeducation after EMDR?
Not providing psychoeducation related to the potential to feel “out of alignment” or emotionally vulnerable after EMDR. For most of my clients, this vulnerability is worse the first 24 hours and gets much better as the week progresses.
Can a new EMDR client switch to the memory channel?
It may not be clear to the client new to EMDR that he can switch to the memory that wants to come instead. Good education related to noticing whatever comes up on any channel goes a long way. It’s helpful to ask if anything is coming on any channel, including the memory channel.
What is EMDR and how does it work?
