Do house elves want to be free?

House-elves are the invisible backbone of the wizarding community, forced to do work against their bidding and passed along in wealthy families as property. The majority of the house-elves in the Harry Potter series don’t want to be free. They love to work and find the idea of wages insulting.

Why are house elves slaves in Harry Potter?

They want to serve. They don’t want payment for their services. If you freed a house-elf, it would either be incredibly sad (Winky) or, if the house was evil and treated the elf poorly, the elf would probably either pull a Dobby and ask for paid work or find a new household that was a better place.
