Atoms emit light when they are heated or excited at high energy levels. The color of light that is emitted by an atom depends on how much energy the electron releases as it moves down different energy levels.

The protons and electrons of an atom are attracted to each other. They both carry an electrical charge.

How does an atom produce light?

Light is the result of electrons moving between defined energy levels in an atom, called shells. When something excites an atom, such as a collision with another atom or a chemical electron, an electron may absorb the energy, boosting it up to a higher-level shell.

Why do atoms absorb light?

The electrons in an atom can only occupy certain allowed energy levels. When an electron drops from a higher energy level to a lower one, the excess energy is emitted as a photon of light, with its wavelength dependent on the change in electron energy.

No, everything is matter. Matter is made of electrons and quarks. Light is made of photons.

Do atoms have no charge?

An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus, surrounded by one or more negatively charged particles called electrons. The positive charges equal the negative charges, so the atom has no overall charge; it is electrically neutral.
