Do animals Recognise beauty?

Animals (shorthand for non-humans) don’t appear to respond to beauty. They respond to stimulus, preservation, instinct, utility and habit. That’s quite clear. Each species has a different sensory prioritization.

Do animals care about attractiveness?

For animals it’s less about “attractiveness” and more about qualities that show they have good genetic potential. Females prefer the strongest/biggest of their species because their size shows they have good genetics… thus more survival for the family.

I contend that it is much more likely that they choose mates based on physical traits, independent of their beauty. They are wired to appreciate difference, not aesthetics. Why can’t we judge an animal by its beauty?

We know humans can be motivated by such abstract concepts as beauty because we can ask them and they can enumerate their reasons. Such is not possible for animals, therefore we can only judge an animal’s motives by the outcomes of their actions. Does my dog appreciate the beauty of cats?

Do animals do art?

Art would be a strong indicator of aesthetic sense but animals don’t really do art. Some domestic animals can be given brushes to make abstract canvasses, but there is no apparent sense of beauty guiding their hands, paws or trunks when they perform these stunts.
