Are all electric cars automatic transmission?

Are all electric cars automatic? Most electric cars are automatic, and likely will be in the future. This is because an electric car doesn’t require a clutch due to its inability to stall like a petrol or diesel vehicle. Therefore, adding a clutch and various gears might not make much sense.

Why do electric cars have no gears?

They also only make useable and peak torque in a narrow rev band. Thus, with such a wide window of operation, one gear ratio is sufficient to provide the torque and speed required. This does not mean, however, that a multi-ratio setup isn’t possible for an EV.

Does an electric car need a transmission?

Usually, electric cars are built with no transmission whether it is automatic or manual. In hybrids, the situation is different. In Toyota hybrids, the electric motors (two of them) are the transmission! So, there is no traditional transmission but rather a clever electrically controlled CVT -like system.
