It literally means “Maiden’s Tower” in Turkish. The name comes from a legend: the Byzantine emperor heard a prophecy telling him that his beloved daughter would die at the age of 18 by a snake. So he decided to put her in this tower built on a rock on the Bosphorus isolated from the land thus no snake could kill her.

What is the story behind Galata Tower?

It was built in the 14th century by the Genoese colony as part of the defense wall surrounding their district at Galata directly opposite ancient Constantinopolis. They called the tower as “Christea Turris”, or “Tower of Christ”. After the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmet II, it served to detect fires in the city.

Why is it called Galata Tower?

The Genoese named it Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) but it got called Galata Tower after an earlier tower that was destroyed during the Sack of Constantinople by Frankish Crusaders in 1204.

What is the story of Galata Tower?

Galata Tower was first built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinianos in 507-508 AD. The Genoese rebuilt the current tower in 1348-49. The tower was raised between 1445 and 46 years. It was damaged by an earthquake in the 1500’s and was repaired by Architect Murad bin Hayreddin.
