Why is a potentiometer more accurate than a standard voltmeter?

Posted on August 24, 2022 by Author

Why is a potentiometer more accurate than a standard voltmeter?

The Potentiometer accurately measures the potential difference because of zero internal resistance. Thus the voltmeter approximately measures the voltage. The sensitivity of the Potentiometer is very high, i.e. it can measure small potential differences between the two points. The voltmeter has low sensitivity.

Why do we prefer potentiometer to measure emf rather than voltmeter?

A voltmeter draws current from a cell, therefore voltmeter measure terminal potential difference rather than emf, while a potentiometer at balance, does not draw any current from the cell; so the cell remains in open circuit. Hence potentiometer reasds the actual value of emf.

Why is voltmeter less accurate in measuring emf than a potentiometer?

Note: The potentiometer accurately measures the emf because it has zero internal resistance while voltmeter has an appreciable magnitude of resistance and when current moves through it there is a potential drop which the voltmeter measures accurately.

Which is more accurate voltmeter or potentiometer?

Voltmeter is less accurate in measuring the potential difference than a potentiometer.

Why potentiometer is more accurate?

Potentiometer measures the potential difference more accurately than a voltmeter because it does not draw current from external circuit.

Why does a potentiometer measure potential more accurately?

A) It measures potential in an open circuit. We know that the open circuit is in which the current in the two terminals of the component is zero and in closed circuit, the current flows through the two terminals. …

What is potentiometer would you prefer a voltmeter or a potentiometer to measure the emf of a battery?

A potentiometer is preferred to measure the emf of a battery, as it gives a more accurate result. This is because a potentiometer uses the null method to measure emf and it hardly draws any current from the primary circuit.

Why potentiometer is more sensitive than voltmeter?

Assertion (A) : Potentiometer is more sensitive than the voltmeter. Reason(R) : Potentiometer does not draw current from the voltage source.

Why would a potentiometer be expected to give a more accurate value for the emf than a moving coil voltmeter?

The potentiometer accurately measures the potential difference because of zero internal resistance. Whereas, the voltmeter has a high internal resistance which causes the error in measurement. The sensitivity of the potentiometer is very high, i.e. it can measure small potential differences between the two points.

Why potentiometer method is considered as an accurate method for measuring potential difference?

Why is a potentiometer an accurate and versatile device to make electrical measurements of emf?

A potentiometer is an accurate and versatile device to make electrical measurements of emf because the method involves a condition of no current flow through the galvanometer, the device can be used to measure potential difference, internal resistance of a cell and compare emf’s of two sources.
