Why does oxygen have a lower electron affinity?

Posted on August 29, 2022 by Author

Why does oxygen have a lower electron affinity?

I’ve read that oxygen has a lower electron affinity (as shown the picture below), because it has a smaller atomic radius than sulfur and thus the electrons experience significant electron-electron repulsion.

What causes higher electron affinity?

Electron affinity increases upward for the groups and from left to right across periods of a periodic table because the electrons added to energy levels become closer to the nucleus, thus a stronger attraction between the nucleus and its electrons.

What elements have a higher electron affinity than oxygen?

Electron affinity follows the trend of electronegativity: fluorine (F) has a higher electron affinity than oxygen (O), and so on.

What is the electron affinity of selenium?

195 kJ/mol.
Electron Affinity of Selenium is 195 kJ/mol.

Does selenium have a lower electron affinity than oxygen?

In the periodic table Oxygen, Sulphur and selenium all are present in the same group in the order Oxygen, Sulphur, selenium. As we go down the group the size of the elements increases and the electron gain enthalpy decreases. Hence, The correct order of electron affinity is $ O < Se < S $ .

Is selenium bigger than oxygen?

The electron affinity of selenium is greater than oxygen. The reason for this is the small size of oxygen atom as compared to the selenium atom and so its charge density is high, and when then if we add an electron to oxygen atom then the repulsion between electrons will increase.

Which of the following elements have electron affinity less than oxygen?

Thus, in case of oxygen and sulphur which are present in the same group, sulphur has greater electron affinity than oxygen. So, out of the given elements to us, nitrogen has the lowest electron affinity. Hence, the correct option is (A) Nitrogen.

What is greatest electron affinity?

Which Element Has the Highest Electron Affinity? Chlorine has the highest electron affinity among the elements. Its high affinity can be attributed to its large atomic radius, or size. Because chlorine’s outermost orbital is 3p, its electrons have a large amount of space to share with an incoming electron.

Why selenium has less electron affinity than Sulphur?

So, on the basis of size, electron affinity of selenium must be highest. But the size of Sulphur and selenium is not that different. Therefore, combining the effect of size and electron gain enthalpy the electron affinity of Sulphur is a bit higher than selenium and that of oxygen is least in the group.
