Why do military aircraft require so much maintenance?

Supersonic jet engines need maintenance more often than high bypass commercial engines. They are stressed much more, and work on a much tighter margin of error, thus fighter/bomber aircraft need maintenance more often.

Why do military planes fly so close together?

Usually, due to the finesse necessary to keep one aircraft flying in a precise place relative to another, flying in tight formation uses more fuel than flying a mile or two apart. Military aircraft do not fly in formation for reasons of fuel, often they fly in formation to mutually support one another.

Why do military planes fly low?

Defence can deploy to potential trouble spots around the world, usually with little or no warning. Flying at low level is used to avoid detection by an adversary, avoid engagement by some types of weapons and fly underneath poor weather where it is important to keep in sight of the ground or water.

How often does an airplane need maintenance?

Commercial airplanes require frequent maintenance to offer a safe flying experience. They typically undergo a basic maintenance inspection once every two days, followed by a more thorough heavy maintenance inspection once every few years.

How often is a jet engine serviced?

Depending on the type, an engine has to be taken apart, cleaned and serviced every 3,000 or more flight cycles. This means an engine receives a major overhaul every five years, in addition to more frequent, less radical visits to the workshop.

Why do Blue Angels fly so close?

The Blue Angels can fly close together due to the air pressure created by each jet. The air creates a bubble of pressure around the aircraft. When the planes start to travel too close, the pilot may feel resistance from the air pressure created by the adjacent aircraft.

Why are military planes GREY?

Most of the military aircrafts are painted grey in colour in order to reduce their visual signature in sky and in turn increase the visual stealth of aircraft. Which means they are harder to see from other opponent aircrafts and ground forces.

HOW LOW CAN military planes fly over my house?

Are Planes checked after every flight?

The A check is performed approximately every 400-600 flight hours, or every 200–300 flights, depending on aircraft type. It needs about 50-70 man-hours, and is usually performed in an airport hangar. The A check takes a minimum of 10 man-hours.

What is the lifespan of a fighter jet?

Modern fighter jets have typically been designed to withstand 8,000 total hours of flight time during their operational lifespan. With an average of 200 hours in the air each year, this means they are expected to continue delivering high performance in sorties and missions for somewhere between thirty and forty years.
