Why did renly think he had a claim to the throne?

Renly was stupid, arrogant and young and he thought that he had the better claim because of his popularity and thought that he could win the Throne by the sword the same way that Robert won with his hammer.

Is renly evil?

Renly is not really an evil person, but he is not even much of a good one either, as he lacks morality and has no problem causing the deaths of innocent if it means gain something personal in return. Renly has a positive relationship with Ser Barristan Selmy and he’s corterous to Sansa Stark.

Renly Baratheon was the Lord of Storm’s End, Master of Laws on Robert’s Small Council, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, and the younger brother of King Robert I Baratheon and Lord Stannis Baratheon. His parents were Lord Steffon Baratheon and Lady Cassana Estermont.
