Why are ethers less soluble in water?

If we look at the structure of ethers they have oxygen that is bonded to two alkyl groups (R−O−R). Oxygen will have a high electronegativity and can form hydrogen-bond with water molecules similar to alcohol. Thus, they can only act as hydrogen bond acceptors. This makes them have a lower solubility in water.

Is alcohol more soluble in water than ether?

The difference between the ether group and the alcohol group, however, is that the alcohol group is both a hydrogen bond donor and acceptor. The result is that the alcohol is able to form more energetically favorable interactions with the solvent compared to the ether, and the alcohol is therefore more soluble.
