Although not a formal mental-health diagnosis, duck syndrome has mostly been described in college or graduate students and refers to the situation in which the sufferer looks completely calm on a superficial level while in reality, they are frantically trying to keep up with the demands of their life.

What is a duck baby?

Soon after birth, baby ducks, called ducklings, open their eyes. A little more than a day after hatching, ducklings can run, swim, and forage for food on their own. They stay in the nest for less than a month. A group of ducklings is called a brood.

Why is it called duck syndrome?

Duck Syndrome refers to that image of a duck we see effortlessly gliding across the water. However, what we can’t see is that, under the water, that same duck is ferociously paddling to maintain its graceful appearance.

What makes a duckling follow its mother psychology?

During a young duckling’s imprinting, images of the duckling’s mother (and its siblings) act like a metaphorical stamp, leaving an impression in the brain that guides the young duckling on who to follow. Though it often works out that the mother is the first thing the duckling sees, this doesn’t have to be the case.
