If an individual’s personal belongings are stolen from their room by housekeeping, the hotel may be liable. Liability of the hotel does not require that the hotel have any knowledge that led to the theft. The guest would only have to prove the hotel was negligent.

Can hotel security search your bags?

In general, during a guest’s stay at the hotel, only the guest may consent to a search of his or her room. Fourth Amendment protections do not apply after a guest’s tenancy expires, at which point those employees with proper authorization from the hotel may aid the police and consent to a search of the room.
