What does it actually mean to be yourself or to be real?

In general, “be yourself” means be true to your core identity rather than faking a different one because you think it will be attractive to others. But we can take it one step further and say that you should also try to the best “you” that you can be; being the ideal “yourself.”

What does it truly mean to be yourself?

Being yourself means living life how you want to live it, regardless of other people’s opinions. And it means you respect yourself. Don’t worry about what others think. You can’t control them or their thoughts. If you like who you are, then that is all that matters.

Being real means being honest with yourself, acting according to your values, and bringing your full self to every interaction. As crazy as it sounds, if you use others as an example, you might find yourself trying to “be real” in a way that doesn’t fit your personality or values at all!

When you are being true to yourself, you are completely honest with what you feel, deeply value, and desire. It also means communicating your feelings wholeheartedly both with yourself and others, allowing your truth to flow through you and into the world.

In my quest for answers I’ve found that it is very much possible to just be yourself. The person who is a jerk to others and the person who is afraid of social situations are, in actuality, not being themselves. Their real self is just being covered up with conditioned, fear-based thinking.

Your self-expression matters, and you should value your voice. It’s okay to need things, it’s okay to speak up, and it’s okay not to be okay. Telling someone you are simply “fine” when you are not, does your story and your journey a great disservice. Being true to yourself entails embracing all aspects of your existence.

How to be true to yourself and live the life you want?

While seeking to be true to yourself and live the life you want, you will have to face a fact: Change will happen. Whether that change is good or bad is unique to each person and their perspective. You might have to start over, once, twice, a few times. It doesn’t mean that everything will be okay, but that you will be okay.
