What are the Ents in Lord of the Rings?

One of the more interesting of these creatures comes in the form of the Ents– the tree shepherds charged with defending the forests of Middle Earth. Ents are pivotal to the story told in The Lord of the Rings, as they are ultimately responsible for the destruction of Isengard and the downfall of Saruman.
