Is the trombone the only instrument with a slide?

The trombone is the only instrument in the brass family that uses a slide instead of valves to change pitch. A standard trombone is made of long thin brass pipes. Two U-shaped pipes are linked at opposite ends to form an “S.” One pipe slides into the other so the total length of the pipe can be extended or shortened.

Why does the trombone have a slide?

The ‘slide’, the most distinctive feature of the trombone (cf. valve trombone), allows the player to extend the length of the air column, lowering the pitch.

Most trombones will be a golden color, but some may be a silver instead. A slide is about 2.5ft. long when not extended at all, and will roughly double in length when fully extended.
