Is equipping a shield a bonus action?

Equipping a sword would take an action because no free stuff left. A shield is per RAW 1 action to strip on. The workaround for many groups and as I was handling it is: Drop ur crossbow to the ground (nothing) > draw ur sword during move action>action>bonus action.
