What is Energy Modelling? Energy modelling is a process used to estimate the energy consumption of a building, typically on an annual basis. Information about climate, orientation, design geometry, building materials, and mechanical and electrical systems is collected.

What are the different types of energy Modelling?

Energy models can be classified into three main types, depending on how they process information: white-box, black-box and grey-box. This classification is used in general by data scientists, and is not exclusive for energy models. The model is fully based on physics, and the properties of the system being modeled.

Why is energy modeling important?

Energy modeling is extremely important when designing sustainable buildings, as it can be used to quantify tradeoffs between up-front construction costs and operational energy costs, preventing expensive infrastructural adjustments further into the project.

How much does energy modeling cost?

The answer—energy modeling payback is typically 1 or 2 months! —is surprising at first. But it shouldn’t be. For large buildings, modeling costs run from $30,000 to $200,000 depending on the ECMs considered and the tools required to evaluate them.
