How do you transpose concert C to BB?

Example: Transposing from a C instrument to a B-flat instrument.

  1. Move the key up one whole step (or whole tone).
  2. Our key of C Major transposes to a key of D Major. Likewise, G Major would transpose to A Major, B-flat Major to C Major, and so on.

Why is C on a trumpet B flat?

If you write a C on the Bb trumpet score, then the sounding pitch will be Bb. This is because “C” is a major 2nd higher than Bb. For the key signature to sound in C major: Bb trumpet key signature must be in D Major (two sharps) because the written pitch is a Major 2nd higher.

while for Bb major, the Bb is a 1, the C is a 2 etc. Once you’re familiar with the scale, you’ll do well to remember that the formula for an A# major chord (and any tonic major chord of any key) is 1-3-5 which gives the notes A#-C##-E# while the formula for a Bb major chord is 1-3-5 which gives the notes Bb-D-F.

So, this means that if a trumpet player and a pianist want to play B flat concert scale together, the pianist will start on their B flat key, and the trumpet player will start on C, since C sounds a B flat.
