Beeswax is the most recommended method. Rubbing a small amount along the length of the rope can improve its feel and handling. Waxing can also help to minimize shedding and reduce friction without significantly affecting the way it holds knots. For photographers, wax also adds a little shine to the rope.

Use a gas flame (stove or blowtorch) if available, or a candle will also work. If you’re using a candle then you will want to wipe the rope with a damp cloth afterwards to remove any soot. You’ll want to run the rope across the flame to singe off the loose fibres.

  2. Pass one end of the rope in the carabiner and wrap it around itself. Some do 3 or 4 twists, or make a Munter hitch.
  3. Make a seesaw movement a few times. Then progressively apply this process on the entire rope.
