Could fingolfin have defeated Sauron?

Yes he did damage Morgoth, but that’s just it, didn’t come close to slaying him, never will come close to slaying him. Sauron is smarter than his very own master and he can always perform plans to defeat Fingolfin if he so was worried. Don’t get me started on what a bloodlusted Sauron can do.

No. Unless Dagor Dagorath is canon, then Morgoth has permanently lost. The Valar sent him to the Timeless Void to be imprisoned there for all of eternity, he had no hope of escape, especially with it being guarded. Even if Sauron did win, he would not try to free his master, highly doubt he could even if he wanted too.

Is Morgoth an elf?

Melkor was renamed “Morgoth” when he destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor, murdered Finwë, the High King of the Noldor Elves, and stole the Silmarils in the First Age. The darker name was then bestowed by Finwë’s son Fëanor, and the Elves called him thereafter by that name alone. “Morgoth Bauglir” is thus an epithet.
