The amoeba is also sometimes found in soil. The amoeba enters your body through your nose via contaminated water, mud or dust, and travels to your brain through the nerves that transmit your sense of smell. Only a tiny percentage of the millions of people who are exposed to Naegleria fowleri ever get sick from it.

Though you can’t see them, amoebas are everywhere. They live in soil, ponds, lakes, forests and rivers.

Naegleria Fowleri is the brain eating amoeba that lives naturally in freshwater including lakes, rivers, ponds, even ditch water and hot springs, underchlorinated splash pads, and has been found in public water systems after deaths occured from nasal rinsing with neti-pots without distilled or previously boiled water.

Can brain eating amoeba live outside water?

Naegleria fowleri prefers warm waters and grows at temperatures up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius). The amoeba may survive at even higher temperatures for short times but is killed by refrigeration.

Can you get a brain eating amoeba from the shower?

Normal bathing or showering isn’t a risk because even if tap water is contaminated, it doesn’t penetrate into the deepest nasal passages. Brain infections from the amoeba usually pop up in late summer, when warm water favors its reproduction and many people are diving into ponds to escape the heat.

What states have brain-eating amoeba?

Naegleria fowleri is found around the world, often in warm or hot freshwater (lakes, rivers, and hot springs). It is commonly found in lakes in southern-tier states, but has caused infections in more northern states, including Minnesota. The ameba grows best in warm or hot water.

Can you get a brain-eating amoeba from washing your face?

It’s important to note that you CANNOT get infected from DRINKING contaminated water, but there is a risk when washing your face or showering. Infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in freshwater and the contaminated water enters the body through the nose.
