Student athletes often are held to higher standards in academics and conduct than their nonathlete counterparts. Athletes are required to maintain good grades to play their sports, and now some counties are including policies and contracts concerning their off-campus behavior.

This is due to some sports happening during the week and travel requirements. Professors are aware of this and they are required by the school to not punish the student. So yes, they treat them differently, but in my experience it is only in accordance with their special circumstance according to school policy.
