Will TikTok be banned in the US?

In the US, President Biden in June withdrew Trump’s executive order seeking to ban TikTok as well as another Chinese-owned app, WeChat. Last week, TikTok and the administration agreed to drop litigation over Trump’s attempted ban.

Lawmakers and regulators who are wary of Chinese technologies have targeted the app’s vulnerabilities and branches of the U.S. military have prohibited the use of the app on government-issued devices.

What happened to the TikTok deal?

The deadline was extended several times, and Oracle and Walmart emerged as the putative saviors for TikTok in a deal that was later shelved. At one point, Trump brazenly suggested any sale should include a cut for the US government itself. A year on, nothing has changed and everything has changed.

On Sunday, a US judge temporarily blocked one of the executive orders signed by Mr Trump, which would have banned TikTok from smartphone app stores in the country. The order was due to take effect at 11.59pm on Sunday.

Why is the US government concerned about TikTok?

U.S. officials are concerned with TikTok because the hugely popular, Chinese-owned app can potentially pass on users’ data to the authoritarian Chinese government. The U.S.-owned tech company Oracle is in talks with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to purchase or acquire a majority stake in the app.
