Why does Arwen start dying in Return of the King?

Posted on August 26, 2022 by Author

Why does Arwen start dying in Return of the King?

She didn’t want her life to be over at all. She wasn’t destined to die until she had lost everything she gave up immortality for; i.e. her marriage to Aragorn. Arwen was 2,778 years old in T.A. 3019 when she married Aragorn and became Queen of Gondor. She died, one year after Aragorn in F.A.

Why couldn’t Arwen go to the undying lands after Aragorn died?

Since he was mortal, though, with his spirit destined to go to the place reserved for Men—where she, as an Elf, was not allowed/designed to go by Ilúvatar—she could only fulfill her desire by becoming a mortal herself. She did so, giving herself to death on Cerin Amroth in the year after Aragorn’s death.

Did Arwen save Frodo in the book?

The only scene in the book in which she speaks is after she has been made Queen and she gives Frodo a white gem from around her neck to help sustain him until he can get healing in Valinor.

Why is Arwen about to die?

So Arwen is dying because she has chosen to remain in Middle-earth after her father departs. It is less clear why she is literally about to die – in the books, she isn’t dying now, she has just decided that at some point in the future she will die.

Is Arwen’s fate now tied to the fate of the ring?

The line about “Arwen’s fate is now tied to the fate of the Ring” makes more sense in this light. Arwen will stay in Middle-earth no matter what, and if Sauron gets the Ring, everyone in Middle-earth, including Arwen, will be boned. If the Ring is destroyed, she’ll stay with Aragorn, and die at some unknown time in the future.

Why does Arwen decide to stay with Aragorn?

Thus, because of the “choice” all Elrond’s children must make, Arwen has to choose between going with her father to the Undying Lands and living there forever, but leaving behind the man she loves; or staying with Aragorn after her father departs, but becoming mortal.
