Why do we say things in India?

Some of the things that we say in India may not make any sense to an outsider, but these are also what make us so uniquely Indian. A few of them are literal translations from our native languages and others just something that our creative minds invented.

What do you call someone who looks older than you in India?

In India, everybody who looks older than you is either an Auntie or an Uncle. It doesn’t matter whether you know the person or you don’t, addressing them as Auntie or Uncle is a given. “Side, please” is the Indian version of “Excuse me”, but it doesn’t apply in all the situations that the latter does.

What to do when there is a power cut in India?

Whenever there’s a power cut in India, one of the first things that all parents tell their kids to do is to check if the neighbour has been affected too. It’s almost a reflex action. If the house next door is in the dark as well, we tend to breathe a sigh of relief.

What is the Hindi language?

As an official language of India (next to Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu and many others), Hindi is native to northern India and Pakistan (where the Hindustani language or dialect is called Urdu and written with an Arabic script rather than the Hindi Devanagari alphabet.) Obviously, learning Hindi takes a long time.

Why should you learn Hindi?

Whether it is spirituality, food, art, architecture or industry that have led you to want to learn Hindi, Hindi is a great language to speak and the learning process doesn’t have to be difficult. Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and derives from Sanskrit, written in the Devanagari script.

And yet the language has evolved so much, from Sanskrit to Prakrit to Khariboli to Hindi, alas, we now cannot do without an English to Hindi Dictionary.
