Why did the film industry move from the East Coast to the West Coast?

The availability of land was also not a problem in California, and it was inexpensive. So filmmakers began the move to California to get out from under the thumb of Edison and his patent monopoly. It was far enough away that it made enforcing the patents difficult since coast to coast travel wasn’t like it is today.

When and why did the movie industry move west?

In the early 1900s, most motion picture patents were held by Thomas Edison’s Motion Picture Patents Company in New Jersey, and filmmakers were often sued to stop their productions. Why did the film industry start in Hollywood?

Hollywood was an ideal place to produce movies since filmmakers couldn’t be sued there for infringing on motion picture film patents held by Thomas Edison and his Motion Picture Patents Company. It also had warm, predictably sunny weather and diverse terrain perfect for movie backdrops.

What circumstances led the film industry to shift from the East Coast to California?

“There were a number of reasons the movie business moved to Southern California,” said Charles Musser, a professor of film history at Yale. “Weather was certainly one of them. They didn’t have the terrible winter weather of the East. There was no rain and it was much warmer so you could work outside all year.”

What caused the movie industry to move to Hollywood?

Independent filmmakers fled to Hollywood. The physical distance from the Edison Trust made it easy to work on their films without the tight control and patent enforcement. The reliable sunshine and temperature also made Hollywood a more suitable place to make films year-round.
