Why are my cashews Brown?

Cashew nuts kernels are easily damaged by worms (known as black spots on cashews, brown spots, dark spots on cashews) when dark spots appear on the surface of the cashew kernel, which means they in low quality.

How do you know if a cashew has gone bad?

One of the first ways you know your cashews have gone bad is the presence of mold growth. A bitter taste, brittle consistency, or very dry texture will indicate that the cashews are rancid and should be thrown away. Once cashews have gone rancid, refrigerating or freezing them will not make them good again.

Can cashews go bad and make you sick?

Consuming rancid or stale nuts like almonds, walnuts or cashews in small amounts may not immediately make you sick, but it’s generally not advisable as it may hamper digestion or have other harmful effects on your body in the long term.

Are store bought raw cashews safe to eat?

Even cashews labeled as raw in stores have been shelled and heat-treated, either through roasting or steaming, to remove urushiol residue. As such, you can be confident that the cashews you purchase from the store are safe to consume, as they’ve been commercially prepared to remove the naturally occurring urushiol.

Do cashews go stale?

As you already know, cashews can go rancid. And these nuts are much more likely to go rancid that to spoil in the usual meaning of this term. Let’s start with raw cashews bought in bulk. These should retain freshness for about a month in the pantry, and close to 6 months in the fridge.

Can cashews grow mold?

It is possible for mold to form on cashews – or any other nuts – but only if there has been moisture penetration into the container. If the moisture is at a safe (low) level, then mold won’t grow.

Should you keep cashews in the fridge?

You can store raw cashews for up to a year or more if you keep them in a sealed bag in a cool, dark, dry environment such as the freezer. You can keep them in the refrigerator for four to five months.

Cashews: Are especially rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA’s), similar to those found in olive oil. Studies suggest that MUFA’s can help in reducing inflammation and therefore reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

How long can you eat cashews after opening?

Once you open the package, the nuts should stay fresh for about 2 weeks in the pantry, and about a month in the fridge. Once again, if you need to store them for longer, freeze the cashews. Of course, the nuts will usually last a bit longer before they go rancid, but it’s not possible to determine how long exactly.

Why do my cashews smell like fish?

If your nuts have a fishy smell, that means they have gone rancid. They will also have a bitter taste.
