What was the point of the Naboo blockade?

The blockade was meant to demonstrate that they could halt trade at any planet there by depriving the republic of that revenue (b/c the republic has no military they can’t stop the TF). So here’s my question, what did Darth Sidious have to do with it and why did they listen to him?
