Is the equinox when day and night are equal?

The equinoxes happen in March (about March 21) and September (about September 23). These are the days when the Sun is exactly above the Equator, which makes day and night of equal length.

What is the equinox of the moon?

One happens approximately on March 20, called the vernal or Spring equinox. The other is on September 22, called the autumnal equinox. The moon phases are directly affected by the equinoxes because of the position of Earth to the Sun. During the autumnal equinox, the Moon phase is the Third Quarter Moon.

The reason that day and night are equal in length on the equinox is because the earth’s axis is perpendicular to its orbit, so the terminator, which is the shadow line on earth separating night from day, runs from pole to pole.

The days and nights are equal all over the world on March 21st and September 23rd because the sun crosses the plane of the earth’s equator making day and night of equal length. March 21st is known as Spring or Vernal Equinox and September 23rd is known as Autumnal equinox.
