Is a 18 megapixel camera good?

Yes. 18 megapixels is more than adequate to blow up your photos to a large size. I still use a Nikon D90 as a second camera and it only has 12 megapixels. I blow up decent clear prints of A3 size using this camera.

All else being equal, having more pixels produces sharper images. 20 MP isn’t a huge upgrade over 16MP, but it is an upgrade. I always find it strange when people wonder about the point of having more pixels, but never question the usefulness of having sharper lenses. The two are much the same.

A camera with 10-20 megapixels is going to, in most cases, be more than capable of meeting all your needs. You’d be served far better by saving money on your camera and investing in better lenses. On the other hand, high-megapixel cameras are exceptionally useful to many, but not all, commercial photographers.

Understanding Megapixels A 1-megapixel camera takes photos with a million pixels in them; a 20-megapixel camera captures 20 million pixel photos. What is the difference between 12 megapixel and 18 megapixel?

If the cameras are otherwise comparable, you get more details with highter resolution. However, 12 megapixel is good enough for most uses. If you for example make 4″ x 6″ prints, you can’t see the difference between 12 megapixel and 18 megapixel. If you enlarge a part of the image, the higher resolution will allow you to enlarge it more.

How do you calculate how many megapixels are in a picture?

Multiply the width (in pixels) by the height (in pixels). So for that 8 x 10 inch print, it would be 2400 x 3000, which equals 7.2 million pixels. Divide the result from step 2 by 1 million, and you have the number of megapixels you need to make a good print.
