How are draft picks determined in the NBA draft?

Drawings will be conducted to determine the first four picks in the NBA Draft. The remainder of the “lottery teams” will select in positions five through 14 in inverse order of their 2020-21 regular-season records.

How does the first round draft work?

Starting with picks that each team has of their own, followed by picks they have via trade – if the team’s own first round pick is by protection, it will be asterisked. *The protection means that if the team that is sending you the pick lands within the protected range, they get to keep that pick.

How many combinations do the worst teams get in the draft?

Until 2018, the worst team received 250 combinations, the second worst getting 199, the third worst team 156, and so on. The first three draft picks were determined. Starting in 2019, the three worst teams receive 140 combinations each, the fourth worst 125, and so on. Those three teams will have an equal chance of winning the top overall pick.

Under the pre-2019 system, the team with the worst record would pick no lower than fourth. The new system will level the odds at the top of the NBA Draft Lottery so that the teams with the three worst regular-season records will each have a 14 percent chance of winning the lottery.
