Does game theory apply to chess?

Game theory is hard to apply to chess as it assumes perfect play by both sides(see John von Neumann’s theory of poker, where if your opponent acts like a fool his theory gets shot down).

Is it necessary to learn chess theory?

Learning opening theory as practiced by leading grandmasters is not necessary. What is necessary however is developing your own opening repertoire, whether those openings are in vogue or not. You don’t need to read books to do this: just play the same openings consistently.

How do chess players learn theory?

Asking! Simply play top rated players, and ask them WHY they made a certain move, or why specific lines are better than others. You will learn a lot simply by asking people.

How long does it take to learn chess theory?

Now, if you are looking for a somewhat general answer, we can say 1-2 years of practicing can be enough to build a good foundation and consider yourself an excellent chess player. Unlike physical sports, chess can be learned and mastered at any age.

Will chess ever be solved?

Chess hasn’t been solved and it won’t be in the next decades (barring ridiculous computing advancement involving quantum computing or such drastic changes). You can calculate in your head for the first move: White has 20 options and black has 20 responses; we already have 400 possible positions.

Where can I study chess theory?

The best way, in my opinion, to learn opening theory is to study a chess database. Chessbase has a free one online, and so does chesstempo. Look up games that match a particular position of your choosing. See what moves strong players play (also look at win percentages).

Are chess opening Books worth it?

Absolutely not. All knowledge that takes time to accumulate is worthless. If you cannot become a GM in under a week you should probably stick to playing chess on weekends for fun. It is not worth your time reading chess books.

Who is the god of chess?

In a move electrifying the world of chess, former world champion Garry Kasparov is coming out of a 12-year retirement Monday to take on a new generation of players who have long worshiped him as the closest thing to a “chess god.” Kasparov utterly dominated the sport from 1985 to 2000.

How many hours should I study chess?

As long as you study efficiently, 45 minutes to an hour a day, or between 5.5 — 7 hrs would get you to this level in a couple of years if you are at maybe 1200 right now. Would take a couple more years if you have just started playing chess.
