Did submarine crews really have to be quiet during silent running could it really make a difference if they talked normally?
Yes, during silent running the crew stays mostly quiet. They still talk since that is necessary for operating the sub. Unnecessary activity is prohibited since it might produce noise. If you are not on watch, you go to your bunk.
Can submarines run silently?
Silent running is a stealth mode of operation for naval submarines. Nuclear submarines can run even more quietly, at very low speeds only, by turning off active reactor cooling during silent running. The reactor is then only cooled by natural convection of the water.
What makes submarines so quiet?
The main source of submarine noise, the propulsion system, is dramatically lowered with the use of sound damping mechanisms, rubber tile coatings along the entire outside hull of the sub, propeller screw design, and the use of precision computer numerical control (CNC) machinery capable of making much higher quality …
Why did they have to whisper in submarines?
Silent running is a stealth mode of operation for naval submarines. The aim is to evade discovery by passive sonar by eliminating superfluous noise: nonessential systems are shut down, the crew is urged to rest and refrain from making any unnecessary sound, and speed is greatly reduced to minimize propeller noise.
Do submarines make noise?
It’s called “pinging” and is part of the submarines active sonar system. Since you give away your own position when you ping another ship, it’s rarely used.
Do unexplained noises really appear on submarines’ sonars?
What we learned is that yes, unexplained noises and even tracked contacts do pop-up on submarines’ sonars, some of which seem to move at incredible speeds, but it is rare and the data is often inconclusive as to what was actually detected.
Do modern submarines use active or passive sonar?
Modern Submarines, though equipped with Active and Passive Sonar, rarely use Active for that very reason. It’s usually only used in training, sea trials, or as a final range verification of a target being tracked just before shooting a torpedo.
Why are nuclear powered submarines so noisy?
A nuclear powered submarine always has to circulate fluids for the reactor and the equipment that circulates the fluids generates noise/vibration to some degree. The noise/vibration can be isolated and dampened, but a sub without that noise generating equipment already has a step up.
Do any navies still use de submarines?
Having done exercises with them (many navies still use DE Submarines), I can attest to that statement.
